Brazen R1 Million Art Heist Shocks Pringle Bay

The South African art world is in shock after a R1 million art heist at the Fomo Fine Art sculpture garden in Pringle Bay, Western Cape earlier this month.

Seven sculptures were stolen in the night raid, including six works by Anton Smit and one by Janko de Beer.

Emotional and Financial Blow

Janko de Beer called the theft “a heavy blow to the creative community.”

“The loss amounts to just over R1 million, but the emotional and cultural loss is far greater,” he said.

He urged collectors, galleries, and the public to help trace the missing works and report suspicious activity.

Police Investigation

The perpetrators reportedly disabled the garden’s front CCTV camera before escaping with the artworks.

Police confirmed that a full investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made nearly three weeks after the incident.

Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to contact their nearest police station or report anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
