Chaos in Parliament: Ramaphosa Clashes with EFF Over Security Presence

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Members of Parliament interrupted President Cyril Ramaphosa’s most recent appearance before the National Assembly due to the presence of armed guards in the public gallery, making it anything but a smooth affair.
Tuesday’s meeting, which was supposed to be a standard Q&A, swiftly turned chaotic as EFF members objected repeatedly to what they called “armed security personnel” stationed close to African National Congress (ANC) lawmakers. As a result, there was a 30-minute delay, and Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet ejected a number of EFF MPs both in person and virtually.
“I have to admit that I feel mistreated. During the heated exchange, President Ramaphosa said, “I truly feel abused,” according to EWN.
The president was unable to respond to all of the planned questions because of the disruptions, including the ongoing discussion about the MK Party’s push to reopen Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases and South Africa’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
EFF MP Sinawo Tambo retorted angrily to Ramaphosa’s remarks, citing earlier critiques of his foreign policy.
When Trump was mistreating you in the White House, you didn’t feel that way. In South Africa, your own coworkers abuse you,” Tambo retorted.
Following the altercation, Lotriet declared that the issue would be referred to the Powers and Privileges Committee of Parliament for further investigation, pointing out that the disturbance might be interpreted as unlawful interference in official business.
Although the EFF and ANC tensions are still clearly strained, Parliament is anticipated to return to normal operations in the days ahead despite the flare-up.
