Free State Men’s Indaba rallies South Africa against gender-based violence
Tomorrow morning in Bloemfontein, the national spotlight turns to the Free State, where thousands of men and boys are gathering to confront one of South Africa’s most painful realities. President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at the Provincial Men’s Indaba at Limo Green Park, a major event under the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.
This gathering is not just another speech or symbolic show of support. It is a call to action for men to step forward as allies, leaders, and protectors in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. With more than 4,500 participants expected, from government figures and community leaders to sports personalities and youth groups, the message is clear. The responsibility does not rest on women alone. South Africa needs men to change the statistics, the culture, and the future.
Building healthier ideas of masculinity
The Presidency has described the Indaba as a platform to challenge the damaging norms that still excuse abuse or silence victims. The theme for this year, Letsema: Men, Women, Boys, and Girls Working Together to End GBVF, reminds us that real progress comes from every member of society acting together.
Speakers and sessions throughout the day will focus on creating safe homes and workplaces, as well as pushing for economic fairness for women. This is especially vital in a country where financial inequality often traps victims in dangerous environments.
A moment for accountability and unity
Gender-based violence has been called South Africa’s second pandemic. Each year, public frustration grows as shocking cases headline the news and communities mourn loved ones. The President’s participation signals renewed urgency and is expected to reinforce the commitments already outlined in the National Strategic Plan on GBVF.
There is hope that this Indaba will not only spark dialogue but truly shift behaviour. Many South Africans will be watching for strong follow-through after the powerful words spoken on stage.
As the event begins at 9 am tomorrow, the Free State takes the lead in reminding the country that ending violence against women and children is not optional. It is a national mission that requires courage, accountability, and a willingness to rethink what it means to be a man in South Africa today.
