As rescue crews worked through twisted steel and hardened concrete in Ormonde, the tragedy reached the highest office in the land.

Cyril Ramaphosa has called for a formal inquiry into the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in Johannesburg’s south a disaster that has claimed at least six lives and left others still trapped beneath rubble.

According to reports from the site, the structure gave way shortly after workers finished pouring a concrete slab for the second-floor deck.
