Ramaphosa Maintains ‘Comradely Cordial’ Ties with Mbeki

President Cyril Ramaphosa continues to describe his relationship with former president Thabo Mbeki as “comradely cordial,” even as Mbeki remains outspoken in his criticisms of both Ramaphosa and the current administration. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, emphasized that the relationship is professional and rooted in mutual respect, despite the political tensions.

“Mbeki’s views are his own, and the president recognizes that he is not above criticism,” Magwenya said. “We live in a democracy where free speech is valued, and the president does not lose sleep over criticisms from any quarter, including a former president.”

Mbeki Absence at National Dialogue Convention

Mbeki will not attend the upcoming national dialogue convention at Unisa in Pretoria from Friday to Saturday. His absence follows several foundations pulling out of the Preparatory Task Team, citing concerns over budget control and government oversight of the process. Critics argue the initiative is being rushed and should be more citizen-driven.

Magwenya acknowledged it would have been preferable for Mbeki to participate, but stressed that the convention will proceed with or without him. “The show will go on, and we hope that at some point, not only the Thabo Mbeki Foundation but also other foundations will find a way to engage in the process,” he said.

National Dialogue and IMC Progress

The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), which oversees the convention, has been praised for managing costs effectively and securing sponsorships to reduce pressure on the national fiscus. While DA leader and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen’s participation remains uncertain after his party opted out of the National Dialogue, Magwenya said the IMC has made significant progress and its work has not been hindered.

A Convention Representing a Diverse Nation

Ramaphosa will lead the government delegation and officially open the first national convention, bringing together approximately 1,000 delegates representing South Africa’s rich diversity. The event is being framed as a platform for dialogue across political, social, and cultural lines a step toward broader citizen engagement despite the absence of some notable figures.

For many South Africans, the unfolding dynamics between Ramaphosa, Mbeki, and other stakeholders underscore the tension between institutional continuity, democratic debate, and the role of former leaders in shaping public discourse. As the convention begins, all eyes will be on how inclusive and effective this dialogue process will prove to be.
