Secret Recordings Spark Legal Fireworks in High-Profile Murder Bail Bid

Chatsworth Murder Bail Hearing: Voice Recordings May Discredit State Witnesses
New evidence has surfaced in the Chatsworth murder bail hearing, where a caregiver and her son are accused of strangling a 56-year-old man in his home.
Kogie Adilutchmee Moodley (54) and her son Delon Moodley (25) stand accused of murdering Stephen Narayanasami Chetty on April 25. Chetty, initially declared dead from natural causes, was later found to have been strangled.
Voice recordings submitted to court
During the bail application at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court, the defence revealed voice recordings that may undermine two of the State’s key witnesses.
Attorney Shireen Soobrathi, representing the accused, said the audio involved a group conversation where the witnesses appeared to incriminate themselves.
The recordings, handed to the State on a USB, will be sent to Johannesburg for transcription before being formally presented as evidence when the bail application resumes.
Allegations of deception
Chetty’s sister, Shirreen Govender, told the court that Kogie was hired two years ago to care for Chetty’s wife, Rumba, after she suffered a stroke.
Govender alleged that Kogie misled the family into believing Chetty had died of a heart attack, even producing a letter from a general practitioner that supported the claim of natural causes.
Murder charge and motive
The State alleges that the mother-and-son duo were driven by greed when they plotted Chetty’s death. Both remain in custody pending the continuation of the bail hearing.
