Riverlea High Fire Forces R2.5 Million Rebuild and Emergency Safety Overhaul

Published

According to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), it will likely cost about R2.5 million to repair the classrooms at Riverlea High School that were destroyed by fire.

The school in Randburg was severely damaged in a fire that broke out there in April. The fire destroyed a block of restrooms as well as eleven classrooms. Even though the cause of the fire is still being investigated, the department’s temporary assistance has already helped the school start to recover.

As construction plans begin, Riverlea High has received four mobile classrooms from the GDE to keep instruction on track.

Steve Mabona, a department spokesperson, affirmed that in addition to rebuilding, they are also bolstering the school’s fire safety protocols.

Mabona stated, “The school is now better equipped to respond to future incidents.” “We’re collaborating closely with the City of Johannesburg to make sure this is fixed in the upcoming quarter, but we found that the prior fire safety inspection was not recorded prior to the fire occurring.”

In order to prevent further disruptions to students’ education while long-term infrastructure repairs are being made, the department is acting quickly.

School employees, students, and parents anticipate a safer and completely restored learning environment as the investigation into what caused the fire progresses.
