SA Braces for Drenching: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, and Flooding Expected Today

South Africans across much of the country should keep umbrellas handy today, as a significant weather system brings the threat of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and possible flooding.

The South African Weather Service has issued multiple alerts, with an Orange Level 5 warning in place for severe thunderstorms in the northern parts of the country.

Provincial Breakdown

Gauteng – will be partly cloudy and warm, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers. The UVB index is High.

Mpumalanga – can expect morning fog along the escarpment and Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo – will see morning fog along the northern escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowersscattered in the north, and hot in places.

North West – will be fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east.

Free State – starts fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the extreme east.

Northern Cape – will be partly cloudy and warm to hot, but cool over the southern parts. No significant rain is expected.

Western Cape – will be cloudy and cool to warm with a chance of light rain and showers in the west and southern parts. The UVB index is Very High.

Eastern Cape – (Western half) will be fine and cool to warm, becoming cloudy with isolated showers and rain in the south from late morning, scattered along the coast west of Gqeberha. The Eastern half will be partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy with isolated showers and rain south of the escarpment from the afternoon, scattered along the coast.

KwaZulu-Natal – will see morning fog over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers. Hot in the north-east. UVB index is Low.

Weather Alerts

The significant warning is the Orange Level 5 for severe thunderstorms with:

  • Heavy downpours leading to flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying bridges/areas

  • Damaging winds

  • Excessive lightning

  • Large amounts of small hail that could damage infrastructure and settlements

These conditions are expected over the northern parts of the country.

Stay Safe

Motorists are urged to exercise caution, especially on roads prone to flooding. Avoid crossing low-lying bridges when water is flowing over them. Secure loose outdoor items ahead of strong winds. And remember: when thunder roars, go indoors.

Today is a day for staying dryand staying safe.
