Disruptive rain sweeps northern and eastern South Africa

South Africans in the northern and eastern regions are waking up to a soggy and potentially hazardous Monday, with persistent rain and thunderstorms expected to bring local flooding and widespread disruptions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 5 warning for Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, urging residents to exercise caution as rainfall accumulations could reach 30 to 60 millimetres in certain areas, particularly in the Lowveld and eastern Limpopo Valley.

Flood risks and traffic headaches

Recent rainfall has left the ground saturated, meaning even moderate showers could lead to surface flooding. Authorities warn that roads, low-lying settlements, and communities near rivers could be temporarily cut off. Fast-flowing streams and rivers pose serious risks to life, while mud-based or informal housing could suffer damage. In hilly areas, residents are also warned of potential mudslides and soil erosion.

Motorists are advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges and to allow extra travel time. Social media is already buzzing with photos of waterlogged streets in Gauteng suburbs, with residents sharing cautionary messages and advice on local traffic disruptions.

Wider impacts

Parts of the eastern Free State have a 30% chance of rain, with thunderstorms that could become locally heavy. The KwaZulu-Natal coast and nearby interior face a 60% chance of rain, with storms moving inland intermittently.

Meanwhile, the central and western interior, including the Northern Cape and western Free State, are expected to remain mostly dry, offering a reprieve from the wet conditions affecting the eastern provinces.

Stay weather aware

SAWS emphasizes that conditions are likely to remain unsettled into the evening, especially across the eastern regions. Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize safety amid the heavy rainfall.
