Ramaphosa Unaware of SANDF Chief’s Controversial Iran Trip

Confusion and Controversy Over SANDF Chief’s Iran Visit
President Cyril Ramaphosa has distanced himself from a recently revealed visit by South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief Rudzani Maphwanya to Iran, describing the trip as “ill-advised.” According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa was not informed or involved in approving Maphwanya’s travel, which was authorised by Defence Minister Angie Motshekga.
The visit, reported by Iranian media, included Maphwanya pledging “common goals” with Tehran and signalling that his trip carried “a political message.” The remarks have sparked concern given South Africa’s delicate diplomatic balancing act amid heightened tensions with the United States, including the recent imposition of 30% tariffs on South African goods.
Why the Trip Raised Eyebrows
Vincent Magwenya, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, stressed that foreign policy is the exclusive domain of the president and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). “Senior government or military officials making statements of this nature can inflame situations unnecessarily. It is not helpful,” Magwenya said.
Both DIRCO and the SANDF have since distanced themselves from Maphwanya’s statements, emphasising that he does not speak on behalf of South Africa’s foreign policy. Magwenya confirmed that Ramaphosa plans to meet with Maphwanya in the coming week to discuss the visit, though no details about possible consequences have been shared.
Political Reactions and Calls for Accountability
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the SANDF chief to face a court martial over the visit, citing the sensitive nature of international diplomacy. Meanwhile, Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa admitted he was unaware of the trip, stressing that such visits fall under the minister’s authority.
Holomisa urged transparency, suggesting that Maphwanya should openly explain the purpose of his travel and the statements he made. “If he went abroad without permission from the president or the minister, he will have to face the music,” Holomisa said.
Public and Social Media Response
South Africans on social media expressed surprise and frustration over the revelations. Many questioned the chain of command and the accountability of senior military officials, with hashtags calling for clarity and consequences trending briefly. Observers have noted that the timing of Maphwanya’s visit, amid strained US-South Africa trade relations, only heightens the political sensitivity.
For many, the episode highlights an ongoing challenge in South Africa: balancing military autonomy with clear oversight while protecting the nation’s diplomatic interests. As the story unfolds, the public awaits Maphwanya’s return and explanation, hoping for transparency and a resolution that respects South Africa’s foreign policy protocols.
