A busy Sandton intersection has become a hunting ground for car hijackers.

According to Sandton police, the corner of Rivonia and Witkoppen Road has recorded three hijackings in the past monthall occurring in broad daylight.

The Details

The incidents took place between 9am and 1pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is no specific trend regarding the models or types of cars targeted; criminals appear to be opportunistic rather than targeting specific vehicles.

Police have warned motorists to be particularly vigilant when approaching this intersection.

Another Hotspot Identified

The Rivonia and Witkoppen intersection is not the only location of concern. The Woodmead and Buccleuch interchange has also been identified as a hotspot, with reported incidents occurring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1pm and 9pm.

Police Urge Vigilance

Sandton police have urged members of the public to always be vigilant when stopping at intersectionsbe they traffic lights, interchanges, or stop streets.

“Be aware of your surroundings. Keep doors locked and windows closed. Leave space between your vehicle and the one in front to allow an escape route if necessary,” police advised.

The Bigger Picture

Hijackings remain a persistent challenge in Gauteng’s affluent northern suburbs, where criminals exploit traffic congestion and driver distraction. The daytime nature of these incidents is particularly concerning, suggesting brazenness and careful planning.

For now, the message from Sandton police is clear: at Rivonia and Witkoppen, vigilance isn’t optionalit’s essential.
