Over 200,000 Sassa Beneficiaries Face Delays in June Grant Payments Due to Income Irregularities

If you’re expecting your regular social grant from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) this June, you may want to double-check your status. Sassa has confirmed that over 200,000 permanent grant beneficiaries will face delays in their payments due to irregularities found during an income review.
The issue stems from a recent cross-check between Sassa’s system and registered credit bureaus, which revealed that around 210,000 grant recipients may be earning income they didn’t declare when applying for their grants. This raises red flags under the Social Assistance Act, which requires applicants to truthfully disclose all sources of income — and to report any changes to their financial situation after approval.
What Beneficiaries Need to Do
Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi explained that affected individuals will need to visit their nearest Sassa office within 30 days to undergo a formal grant review. This is in line with Regulation 30 of the Act.
“Failing to do so may result in the suspension or even permanent cancellation of their grants,” Letsatsi warned.
This move is part of a broader effort to clean up the system and prevent fraudulent claims, ensuring that grants go to those who genuinely need them.
Zero Tolerance for Fraud
Sassa has reiterated its tough stance against any form of grant fraud. Letsatsi stated that if any officials are found to be colluding with beneficiaries to manipulate the system, they will face serious disciplinary and legal action.
“We want to preserve the integrity of the social grant system and make sure it’s not being abused,” he said.
Green ID Book Still in Use? Update ASAP
Letsatsi also encouraged beneficiaries who still use the old green bar-coded ID book to replace it with the smart ID card as soon as possible. The older format is more vulnerable to fraud, especially as Sassa continues to move toward more secure payment systems.
Why the Review Matters
This income review process also helps Sassa prevent what’s known as inclusion errors — where someone who once qualified for a grant may now be financially stable enough not to need one. By keeping the system up to date, Sassa can ensure grants go to those who are truly in need.
June 2025 Grant Payment Dates
Despite the delays for some, most beneficiaries can expect their usual payment schedule:
-
Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 3 June
-
Disability Grant: Wednesday, 4 June
-
Children’s Grants: Thursday, 5 June
Sassa currently supports more than 19 million permanent grant recipients across South Africa, including child support, disability, pensioners, foster care, and more.
