What happens under SASSA income review in 2025?

The SASSA income review 2025 is stricter than before, with new biometric enrolment and higher income limits. The South African Social Security Agency says the process will cut fraud and keep grants for those who qualify.

Biometric enrolment now compulsory

  • Since May 2025, all new SASSA applicants must enrol biometrically.

  • Beneficiaries under review must also update their details using this system.

  • The goal is to stop duplicate and fraudulent payments.

New income limits in 2025

SASSA raised the eligibility thresholds this year. If your income exceeds these amounts, you no longer qualify:

  • Old Age, Disability & War Veterans Grants – R107 800 per year (single) or R215 760 (married).

  • Child Support Grant – R67 200 per year (single) or R134 300 (married).

  • SRD Grant – R7 704 per year.

How SASSA income reviews work

  • An SMS notification alerts you when your grant is under review.

  • You must visit a SASSA office with your ID, bank statement, and payslip.

  • Grants are suspended immediately and remain frozen until your review is finalised.

  • If SASSA finds undeclared income, you must repay all money received.

Repayment options

SASSA gives three ways to repay money if you were paid unlawfully:

  1. Full repayment before the end of the month.

  2. Monthly repayments equal to the number of months you were overpaid.

  3. Debit order from your bank, though this option adds interest.

SASSA makes no exceptions for those who cannot repay, meaning all overpaid funds must be returned.
