For a family in South Africa, grief is compounded by a daunting logistical and financial nightmare. Eric Filmalter, a 26-year-old South African known to friends as “The Viking,” was killed in a freak, accidental shooting in Humboldt County, United States. Now, his loved ones are in a desperate race against time and cost, trying to raise R300,000 to bring his body home.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Filmalter died after handling a firearm he mistakenly believed was unloaded and discharging a single shot. Authorities have ruled out foul play and suicide, classifying the incident as a tragic accident.

The Crushing Cost of Coming Home

For his family, the shock of loss is intertwined with the practical horror of international repatriation. “Unfortunately, he did not have insurance that covers this type of tragedy,” explained his sister, Laurette Grobler. The cost to transport his remains back to South Africa is staggering, a sum few families are prepared to bear.

They have turned to the public for help, setting up a GoFundMe campaign with a heartfelt plea. “As a family, we want to bring him home so he can rest in South-African soil the ground upon which he ran as a boy, got up to mischief, and grew up alongside his cousins,” the page reads.

A Newlywed’s Future, and a Community’s Response

The tragedy is particularly acute for Filmalter’s wife, Manisha. The couple were married just this past February. The family has promised that any funds raised beyond the repatriation cost will go toward supporting Manisha’s studies, a small attempt to secure a future suddenly and irrevocably altered.

So far, the response has provided a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. The campaign has raised over R120,000, a significant sum but still far short of the target. Each donation represents a lifeline, a contribution toward ending a family’s agonizing limbo and allowing a young man to finally return to the soil he called home. For the Filmalters, the journey through grief cannot truly begin until their son and brother is back on South African ground.
