There’s some welcome news for drivers: petrol and diesel prices in South Africa are expected to fall in early November 2025. Projections from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) suggest notable drops that would ease the burden at the pumps.
According to the latest estimates:
Petrol 93: decrease of 63 cents per litre
Petrol 95: decrease of 59 cents per litre
Diesel 0.05%: decrease of 35 cents per litre
Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 34 cents per litre
Illuminating paraffin: decrease of 16 cents per litre
These cuts if confirmedwould provide real breathing room for households, businesses and the transport sector.
Two key factors are driving this hopeful outlook:
Stronger rand The South African currency has appreciated against the US dollar, easing the cost of importing fuel.
Lower global oil prices Brent crude has dipped below $62 a barrel, easing pressure on international supply costs.
The easing of geopolitical tensionsespecially in oil‐producing regions has also calmed markets.
Households may see lower transport costs, which can help with grocery and daily expenses.
Small businesses & transport operators will welcome relief, as diesel is often a major cost factor.
Inflationary pressure could ease somewhat, since fuel is a major upstream cost in many sectors.
However, these are projected or “expected” prices. Final figures will be confirmed by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) closer to November.
Will these projected drops hold given volatile currency markets and oil supply shocks?
How will the government and DMRE respond to confirm or adjust these forecasts?
Will the public see consistent pricing across provincescoastal vs inland?
Can this bring momentum for more stable fuel pricing moving forward?
