Stanley Mathabatha Quits as ANC Limpopo Chair Over Unethical Conduct
Former Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha has resigned as the ANC Limpopo chairperson with immediate effect, citing unethical conduct and a breakdown in party values.
In a letter dated 1 September and addressed to ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, Mathabatha said he could not continue leading while the organisation strayed from its principles.
Concerns Over Regional Conferences
Mathabatha raised alarm over the recent ANC conferences in Vhembe and Waterberg, which elected new regional leadership.
He described the processes as showing “serious un-ANC tendencies” and warned of misconduct undermining the party’s integrity.
“This decision is motivated by the concerning misconduct and lack of ANC values that I have observed… particularly in relation to the processes towards and conduct within the conferences of the Vhembe and Waterberg regions,” Mathabatha wrote.
He added that he would step aside to allow the party to function without his involvement but remains open to discussions with national leaders.
Limpopo ANC Faces Internal Struggles
Mathabatha’s resignation ends years of leadership in Limpopo and exposes deep divisions within the ANC provincial structures.
His exit comes as the party prepares for the 2026 local government elections, where it faces growing scrutiny over governance and ethics.
At the same time, Polokwane Mayor John Mpe is under pressure over alleged irregular tender awards and claims of political and economic favours to foreign nationals. Mpe has not been formally charged.
The developments raise questions about ethical leadership in Limpopo and the ANC’s ability to address misconduct within its ranks.
