Courtroom Tension in Durban: Another Twist for the Teddy Mafia Clan

In a dramatic turn of events straight out of a crime thriller, Nashlin Krishin, a 28-year-old relative of the late notorious drug kingpin Yaganathan ‘Teddy Mafia’ Pillay, was arrested for murder just moments before he was due to stand trial for attempted murder.

Krishin now faces charges over the brutal, execution-style killing of Justin Pillay, who was shot more than 30 times in his own home this July. The shooting, allegedly carried out by men posing as police officers, happened while Pillay was asleep, in full view of his 68-year-old father, Poobalan Govindsamy Pillay.

The Arrest: Timing and Allegations

Krishin’s arrest on Friday coincided with his scheduled appearance at the Durban Regional Court alongside Teddy Mafia’s son-in-law and grandson for the attempted murder trial of Andile Cele. The case stems from an altercation in September 2024 involving family members of the notorious Shallcross gang.

Also in custody for Justin Pillay’s murder are Sipho Makhaya and Simphiwe Mbambo. Makhaya was denied bail, while Mbambo withdrew his application. Krishin joined them for their first joint court appearance in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court.

His attorney, Shireen Soobrathi, told the court Krishin had been assaulted while in police custody, allegedly by metro officers pressuring him to confess. She requested that he be treated at Westville Prison hospital and protected from further intimidation during the investigation.

Attempted Murder Trial: A Violent Family Feud

In a separate but connected trial at the Durban Regional Court, Krishin was already facing charges for the attempted murder of Cele, alongside co-accused Isaac Kasan Naidoo, 44, his son Thayrano Naidoo, 18, and Silas Naidoo, 32.

According to the State, Isaac and Thayrano, both part of Teddy Mafia’s family, allegedly attacked Cele during a violent confrontation with Justin Pillay, with Krishin and Silas accused of concealing firearms and cleaning up spent cartridges. All four have pleaded not guilty, and the court heard that a video recorded by the late Justin Pillay may be introduced as evidence.

Cele, the victim of the attempted murder, described being shot in the right knee and assaulted with stones during the incident. “I was lying on the ground and did not see what happened next,” he told the court. Cele identified all four accused as people he knew from the same community, emphasizing the tangled network of family ties and local criminal activity in Shallcross.

Violence, Family, and Legacy

The case underscores how South Africa’s gang and crime networks often intersect with family connections, leaving law enforcement and the courts grappling with multiple layers of accountability. Teddy Mafia, who was killed in his Shallcross home in January 2021, left behind a legacy of violence that continues to reverberate in Durban’s criminal underworld.

The murder of Justin Pillay, coupled with the attempted murder of Cele, shows how disputes within these families can escalate quickly, drawing in younger relatives like Krishin and Thayrano. It also highlights ongoing concerns about police impersonation in violent crimes and the risks faced by victims and witnesses.

Public Reaction and Cultural Context

Locals and social media users have followed the case closely, expressing shock at the brutality and the audacity of the crime. Many noted the repeated pattern of gang-related family feuds in Durban, particularly in areas like Shallcross, where drug syndicates and generational rivalries are intertwined.

Observers say the case illustrates broader challenges for law enforcement: protecting witnesses, maintaining integrity within police stations, and untangling crimes that mix personal vendettas with organized criminal activity.

The murder and attempted murder trials are ongoing, and all eyes are on the Durban Regional and Chatsworth courts as testimony continues. Legal analysts predict that the unfolding proceedings could reveal even deeper connections within the Teddy Mafia family network and expose the extent of violence that has plagued Durban communities for years.

For Durban residents, this case is more than courtroom drama, it’s a stark reminder of the enduring impact of gang violence and the complex legacy of one of South Africa’s most notorious criminal families.
