In a case of harrowing brutality, a three-year-old boy from Sulenkama in the Eastern Cape was allegedly beaten to death with a stick, his small body stuffed into a 20-litre bucket, and secretly buried in a shallow grave. The child’s 23-year-old mother and her 32-year-old boyfriend have been arrested and face murder charges for the September 2024 killing.

The grim truth unraveled after the mother initially reported her son missing at a petrol station in Mbizana last year. However, a police investigation, aided by CCTV footage, revealed a sinister cover-up.

A Cover-Up Unraveled

According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the toddler was allegedly assaulted to death by his stepfather while the family was in Sulenkama. “It is alleged that the child was born whilst both suspects were already in a relationship, but the boyfriend is not the father of the child,” Matyolo said.

After the child died, the couple allegedly sealed his body in a bucket using wire and buried him. The mother then went to police to report him missing, perpetuating the lie.

The Grim Discovery and Arrests

Confronted with the evidence, the couple led police to the shallow grave in Sulenkama on Wednesday evening. The decomposed body of the boy was exhumed, still inside the bucket. The couple was immediately handcuffed by Sulenkama police.

The mother faces an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice for filing the false missing person report. Both suspects are set to appear in the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

“Heartbreaking and Sad”

OR Tambo Police District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, expressed profound sadness. “It is so heartbreaking and sad that a human life can be lost in such a gruesome manner but let the law take its course,” he stated, condemning the murder of an innocent child. He praised investigators for their diligent work in uncovering the horrific crime.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, serving as a stark and tragic reminder of the vulnerability of children and the devastating consequences of domestic violence and cruelty.
