A burglary at an Eastern Cape clinic has left staff too traumatised to return to workand patients are being diverted.

The break-in happened at the Motherwell Community Health Centre in Nelson Mandela Bay during the early hours of Friday.

The Burglary

Police spokesperson Captain André Beetge confirmed a case of business burglary is under investigation.

“It is alleged that the break-in at the Motherwell Health Centre was discovered when the premises were unlocked on the morning of the incident.”

An unknown quantity of computer equipment was stolen. The case is being investigated by Motherwell police.

The Aftermath

Health spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana said the impact on staff has been severe.

“Some staff members indicated that they required counselling support before returning to night duty, while others reported sick for the day shift.”

“This has unfortunately resulted in temporary service disruptions in certain units, including the Trauma and Midwife Obstetric Unit.”

Patient Care

To ensure patient safety and continuity of care, emergency medical services have been directed to divert patients to Dora Nginza Hospital, where doctors are assisting with clinical duties.

Repairs Underway

Infrastructure damage is already being attended to.

“Repairs include securing entrances and gates, installing new security locks, reinforcing access control measures, and repairing damaged doors and gates.”

The department is also working with the Motherwell Clinic Committee, the local ward councillor, and community stakeholders to address safety concerns.

Staff Support

“The department will continue engaging staff to support their return to duty and is exploring contingency measures, including the use of agency nurses where necessary, to ensure services resume as quickly as possible.”

The Bottom Line

A community health centre. Stolen computers. Traumatised staff. Patients diverted.

The burglary is under investigation. Repairs are underway. Counselling is being arranged.

But for the patients who need care, and the staff who need to feel safe, the damage goes deeper than broken locks.
