Youth urged to pursue trade careers as South Africa battles unemployment

South African youth are being urged to pursue trade careers such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and automotive technicians to access jobs and reduce unemployment.

Mzi Mkhutshulwa, business executive at Resolution Circle, said demand for skilled trades is rising as industries evolve.

Rising demand for trade skills

“Tradespeople with expertise in technical and mechanical fields are among the most sought-after professionals globally,” Mkhutshulwa said.

Key areas include:

  • Renewable energy: Solar photovoltaic installation and green technology maintenance.

  • Electrical work: Smart home systems, EV charging stations, and energy-efficient upgrades.

  • Mechanical skills: Diesel technicians, aircraft mechanics, and robotics maintenance.

  • Construction trades: Plumbers, welders, and carpenters for SA’s infrastructure growth.

  • Compliance: Home inspectors as building standards evolve.

Industry 4.0 and adaptability

Mkhutshulwa said automation, 5G, and quantum computing are reshaping industries, requiring trade professionals to combine technical skills with programming and digital fluency.

“From conveyor belts to robotics, tradespeople who adapt to Industry 4.0 will thrive,” he added.

Shifting education mindsets

Research psychologist Dr Pakeezah Rajab warned that many youth still view university degrees as the only route.

“There is a shortage of tradesmen in the country. Many students are not eligible for university, especially in STEM, but trade skills remain in high demand,” she said.

Rajab added that jobs like plumbing and carpentry are secure since they are less affected by artificial intelligence.

Pathway to self-employment

Labour analyst Bukani Mngoma said trade careers also open paths to entrepreneurship.

“Trades encourage self-employment, absorbing youth into both the formal and informal labour market,” he said.
