OHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Education Department is grappling with grief over the harrowing death of a Grade 7 pupil from Echibini Junior Secondary School, who was tragically raped and murdered in her own home in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. The young student’s life was cut short in a brutal home invasion, where a perpetrator broke into the house and committed the heinous act while her family was asleep.
As reported by EWN, this heartrending incident is not the first of its kind in the Pretoria North community. Earlier in the year, a matriculant suffered a similar fate; she was raped and killed on her way home from school, with her body later found near Echibini Junior Secondary School.

The Gauteng Education Department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating, “Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. We are devastated at the occurrence of this gruesome incident. We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the learner’s family and school community at large. We are hopeful that law enforcement agencies will work speedily to bring the perpetrator to book.”
The department, along with the entire school community, is in a state of shock and mourning. The recurring nature of such incidents in the area has raised serious concerns about student safety, both at school and in their journeys to and from home. The community and officials alike are eagerly awaiting the swift action of law enforcement in response to this tragedy, hoping for justice and increased safety measures to prevent future occurrences of such devastating events.
