Trump Pushes for Swift Action

As the war in Ukraine enters its third year, former US President Donald Trump is urging Kyiv to “move quickly” on a potential peace agreement with Russia. Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump stressed the importance of speed, warning that delays could allow Moscow to shift its stance.

“Well, they’re getting close to something, but I hope Ukraine moves quickly. I hope Ukraine moves quickly because Russia is there,” Trump told reporters. “And you know, every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind.”

The call comes ahead of critical negotiations in Miami this weekend, where teams representing the US, Ukraine, and Russia are expected to sit down to discuss draft plans aimed at ending the conflict sparked by Moscow’s 2022 invasion.

Weekend Talks in Florida

Trump’s envoy team includes US special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner. They are scheduled to meet with Ukraine’s negotiator, Rustem Umerov, while separate discussions with Russian officials, including Putin’s economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev, are also on the agenda.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv’s officials would be meeting US counterparts on Friday and Saturday. While the US and Ukraine have reported progress on security guarantees for Kyiv, territorial disagreements remain a key sticking point.

Progress Amid Persistent Challenges

Negotiators have been working on draft proposals to bring an end to the war, but Moscow has yet to formally respond. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his intention to pursue maximalist military objectives, raising questions about whether a compromise is possible.

Trump has positioned himself as a vocal advocate for rapid negotiations, arguing that protracted discussions risk giving Russia leverage. Analysts note that his emphasis on speed reflects both a desire to avoid further escalation and a political interest in being seen as a dealmaker on the global stage.

Public and Political Reactions

The prospect of a US-brokered agreement has elicited mixed reactions internationally. Some view Trump’s push for rapid negotiation as a pragmatic attempt to save lives and restore stability, while others fear that hasty concessions could undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

On social media, commentators debated whether a compromise is achievable given the entrenched positions of Kyiv and Moscow. The question of which territories, if any, Ukraine might cede remains a particularly sensitive topic for Ukrainian citizens and diaspora communities worldwide.

As Miami prepares to host these high-stakes discussions, all eyes will be on the negotiators. The coming weekend could mark a turning point in the war or highlight the difficulties of reconciling the opposing ambitions of Ukraine and Russia.

For now, Trump’s message is clear: time is of the essence, and any delay could shift the balance in ways Kyiv may find difficult to counter.
