SA mourns ‘darling of media’ Tshidi Madia as tributes pour in
South Africa is mourning the untimely death of EWN political journalist and broadcaster Tshidi Madia, who passed away on Wednesday morning after a short illness. She had celebrated her 42nd birthday just five days earlier.
President Cyril Ramaphosa leads tributes
President Cyril Ramaphosa described Madia as a journalist who loved South Africa and always pushed for a better vision of the country.
“Tshidi loved our country, and this was the backdrop to her tough questions and her hopeful vision of a South Africa that can and should be better,” he said.
“Her passing during Women’s Month reminds us of her stature as a remarkable citizen and thought leader. May her soul rest in peace.”
‘Darling of the media’ remembered
Deputy President Paul Mashatile said the country has lost a “formidable voice” in journalism.
“Tshidi was one of the media’s most respected and loved members. If Samkele Maseko was known as the Lord of the Media, Tshidi Madia was most certainly the Darling of the Media.
We will miss her incisive journalism, her pursuit of the truth, and her ability to capture stories that defined South Africa.”
Colleagues and political figures express condolences
EWN described Madia as renowned for her:
-
Objective reporting
-
In-depth political interviews
-
Dedication to impartial journalism
Tributes also came from political parties including the EFF, DA, ActionSA, and ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula.
SANEF honours Madia’s legacy
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) said it is deeply saddened by her passing.
“Tshidi commanded the respect of all political parties while holding them accountable with integrity. She was also a mentor and inspiration to many young journalists, especially women.”
SANEF added that beyond her reporting, Madia was loved by colleagues and admired by the broader South African public.
Funeral details pending
Madia’s funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
