Tshwane Eastern Suburbs to Face Six-Hour Daily Power Outages Next Week

Residents and businesses across eastern Tshwane should prepare for planned six-hour daily power outages from Tuesday, 27 January to Thursday, 29 January 2026. The City of Tshwane has confirmed that the interruptions are necessary for critical upgrades at the Wapadrand 132/11kV substation, which supplies electricity to several residential and business areas in the region.

Why the Outage Is Necessary

City officials say the work forms part of a broader infrastructure renewal programme aimed at modernising ageing electrical networks and improving long-term reliability.

“The upgrades at Transformer B of the Wapadrand substation are essential for enhancing network capacity and securing electricity supply for the future,” the Energy and Electricity Business Unit said in a statement.

While the outage will create short-term inconvenience, authorities stress that these improvements are crucial to avoid more frequent, unexpected power disruptions in the metro.

Areas Affected

Power will be cut daily from 9:00 to 15:00 over the three-day period. The affected suburbs include:

  • Wapadrand supply areas

  • Silver Lakes

  • Six Fountains

  • Equestria

  • Faerie Glen

  • Lombardy

Residents and business owners have been urged to plan ahead, particularly those who rely on electricity for cooking, refrigeration, medical devices, or commercial operations.

Safety Precautions

The municipality has issued a strong safety warning during the outages:

“Customers are advised to treat all electricity supply points as live at all times,” the city said.

Authorities also encouraged households to limit electricity use immediately before and after the planned outages, secure backup power where possible, and store perishable items appropriately.

Public Reaction

Social media has already seen chatter from residents, with some expressing frustration at the timing of the outages during working hours, while others are praising the city for communicating the schedule clearly in advance. Local community groups are sharing tips, such as charging devices in advance, preparing cold meals, and adjusting work schedules to minimise disruption.

This planned shutdown is part of Tshwane’s long-term commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure across the city. Experts say that proactive upgrades like these are vital, especially as electricity demand continues to grow in residential and commercial hubs.

For the residents of Silver Lakes, Equestria, and surrounding suburbs, careful planning will be key to navigating the three days without power while ensuring minimal disruption to daily routines.
