UJ Tops National Charts: Ranked #1 in Four Key Subjects in Global 2026 THE Rankings
In a significant endorsement of its strategic direction, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has emerged as South Africa’s leading institution in four critical academic disciplines, according to the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026.
UJ secured the top national position in Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Business and Economicsfields widely regarded as engines of innovation, industrial development, and economic growth. Beyond these first-place finishes, the university also ranked second nationally in Education Studies, Law, Social Sciences, and Psychology, demonstrating broad-based excellence.
A Strategy “Delivering Measurable Impact”
Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi attributed the results to deliberate institutional choices. “These results confirm that UJ’s strategy is not only sound, but delivering measurable impact,” he stated. He linked the success to sustained investment in academic talent, research infrastructure, and programmes aligned with South African and continental development priorities, as outlined in the university’s Strategic Plan 2035.
The 2026 rankings saw UJ placed in all 11 subject areas assessed, with notable global advances. Computer Science jumped two bands into the 251–300 range worldwide, while Social Sciences climbed to the 151–175 band. The university’s strongest global performers are now Education Studies and Law, both positioned in the 126–150 global band.
Strengthening the Academic Core
Professor Sehaam Khan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, connected the rankings to a focused effort on academic quality. “Our focus has been on deepening academic quality across the entire student lifecycle,” she explained, citing curriculum renewal, digitally enabled teaching, and stronger postgraduate supervision as key drivers.
The THE subject rankings are based on 18 performance indicators across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. UJ’s top rankings in engineering and computer science reflect strength in areas from artificial intelligence and data science to electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering.
Consolidating a Global Footprint
Professor Mpedi concluded that the outcomes reflect UJ’s integration of “research-led teaching with real-world impact,” ensuring students engage with cutting-edge developments while addressing local and global challenges.
For UJ, the 2026 THE subject rankings are more than a badge of honour; they are a tangible benchmark of its rising influence. By leading in the disciplines that shape the future, the university is steadily consolidating its role as a pivotal academic force in South Africa and an increasingly prominent player on the world’s higher education stage.
