Heat, Humidity and Thunderstorms: Gauteng Braces for a Stormy Afternoon
If you’ve stepped outside in Gauteng this morning and felt that familiar sticky heat, you’re not imagining it. The province is heading into another classic Highveld summer day warm, humid, and increasingly unsettled as the afternoon wears on.
Johannesburg is expected to reach a comfortable but muggy 25°C, with nearby areas across the province experiencing similar daytime temperatures. While it may start off calm, forecasters say the atmosphere is primed for showers and thunderstorms later in the day.
Why Today Feels So Unsettled
According to weather forecasters, moisture continuing to move inland is playing a major role in today’s conditions. Warm surface temperatures combined with high humidity are creating unstable air the perfect recipe for afternoon storms.
“We’re looking at a warm day, particularly over Johannesburg, with a high of around 25 degrees,” said forecaster Mpho Rasimphi, noting that cloud cover will increase as the day progresses.
For many Gauteng residents, this pattern is all too familiar. December often brings sudden downpours that arrive with little warning, turning blue skies into heavy rain within minutes.
High Chance of Afternoon Showers and Thunderstorms
Weather models show a 60% to 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms across Gauteng from the afternoon into the evening. Rainfall is expected to spread from central parts of the country, with storms potentially intensifying as they move over the province.
Rasimphi warned that ongoing rainfall could pose risks, particularly in vulnerable areas.
“Significant impact is expected over the interior because of persistent rainfall, meaning flooding is possible,” he said.
Low-lying areas, informal settlements and roads with poor drainage are often the first to be affected, something residents frequently highlight on social media when storms hit.
Level 2 Severe Thunderstorm Warning
Gauteng is currently under a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms. While this does not indicate extreme weather, it does mean heavy downpours, gusty winds and localised disruptions are possible.
“We are still expecting up to a level 2 warning of severe thunderstorms tonight,” Rasimphi confirmed.
Commuters are advised to be cautious during peak travel times, as wet roads and reduced visibility can quickly lead to traffic congestion.
Stay Weather-Aware
With warm temperatures, high humidity and storms on the radar, residents are urged to keep an eye on weather updates and plan outdoor activities carefully.
In Gauteng summers, the rule of thumb remains the same: enjoy the warmth, but keep an umbrella close by.
