Justice for Gogo: 15-Year Sentence for Brutal Attack on 84-Year-Old Grandmother
In the quiet hours of an August night, in the Mandlutsha area of Willowvale, an 84-year-old grandmother’s world turned from peace to terror. Her courage in fighting back against a brutal attacker has now been met with the full weight of the law, as the man who tried to take her life was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
Nkosithandile Mtlaka, 32, was sentenced in the Willowvale Regional Court on Thursday for the attempted murder that left the elderly woman permanently scarred, both physically and psychologically.
A Life Irrevocably Changed
The court heard a harrowing account of the long-term consequences of the attack from the victim’s own daughter. The vibrant elderly woman she once knew is gone, replaced by a shadow of suffering. Her mother now requires continuous medical care, has suffered a significant decline in her mental capacity, has lost her eyesight, and is dependent on diapers.
This devastating picture painted during sentencing underscored the profound impact of a single act of violence, transforming a grandmother’s golden years into a continuous struggle.
The Night of the Attack
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the grandmother’s ordeal began when she was awakened by the sound of someone forcing open her door. Showing immense presence of mind, she switched on a light, looked out the window, and shouted at the intruder to leave.
Sensing the imminent danger, she did not cower. Instead, she armed herself with a bush knife and stepped out of her rondavel to alert her grandson, who was sleeping elsewhere on the property.
But as soon as she stepped outside, Mtlaka emerged from the darkness, armed with a knife. In a fierce act of self-defence, the grandmother managed to strike him on the forehead with her bush knife, leaving a distinct mark. But the blow was not enough to stop him. He overpowered her and stabbed her repeatedly, inflicting deep lacerations before fleeing into the night.
The Path to Justice
The grandmother’s grandson, awakened by the commotion, rushed her to Butterworth Hospital, where she spent two weeks fighting for her life. She was later transferred to Cape Town for further specialized care.
It was her clear-headed description of her attacker, including the telling scar she had inflicted on his forehead, that gave police the key evidence they needed. The distinctive mark led them directly to Nkosithandile Mtlaka, who later confessed to the crime and pleaded guilty.
The NPA has welcomed the 15-year sentence, stating that it not only delivers long-awaited justice for the victim and her family but also sends a clear, unequivocal message: violence against the most vulnerable in our society will be met with the harshest consequences. For a grandmother whose bravery could not save her from life-altering injuries, it is a measure of accountability.
