Two Killed In Zimbabwe Cross-Border Bus Robbery After Johannesburg Departure

A cross-border journey meant to reunite families and deliver goods between South Africa and Zimbabwe ended in horror early Thursday morning when a Delta bus traveling from Johannesburg was ambushed and robbed, leaving two people dead and several others traumatised.
Ambush On The Road To Zimbabwe
According to eyewitnesses, the Zimbabwe-bound bus was intercepted by armed men along its route. Passengers recalled how the attackers forced their way onto the vehicle, demanding valuables and sparking panic among those onboard.
Emergency services were called to the scene after gunfire reportedly broke out. While details remain unclear, The Chronicle reported that two people were shot dead during the incident. Authorities have yet to confirm the victims’ identities, and police investigations are ongoing.
Longstanding Cross-Border Crime Concerns
The robbery has reignited concerns about safety along Southern Africa’s busy cross-border routes. Zimbabwe, in particular, has battled highway crime for years with syndicates targeting buses, trucks, and private vehicles transporting cash, groceries, and goods between major regional trade points like Johannesburg, Harare, and Bulawayo.
These attacks often happen at night or in isolated areas, where limited police visibility leaves commuters vulnerable.
Authorities Urge Vigilance
Police have urged anyone with information about the suspects to come forward as investigations continue. Cross-border travellers are also being warned to remain alert, avoid travelling with large sums of cash, and use verified transport operators when possible.
For many Zimbabweans who rely on these bus routes to connect with family or transport essentials between South Africa and home, the tragedy underscores a harsh reality the road north remains perilous, and safety is far from guaranteed.
