Family Seeks Answers After Death of Zwelethu Tekete in JMPD Training

The family of 26-year-old Zwelethu Tekete is mourning a devastating loss after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that he collapsed and died during its recruitment programme this week.
A Promising Young Man
Zwelethu, a father of two boys aged seven and one, was not only a police hopeful but also a man of many talents. He studied Public Management at Tshwane University of Technology, modelled on local and international stages, and held titles such as Mr Africa Continent 2021 and Mr TUT 2019. Those close to him describe him as ambitious, dedicated, and a people’s person who was driven to uplift his family.
His brother, Mthetheleli Tekete, said the family cannot comprehend his sudden death. Known for his strong fitness routine, Zwelethu was a regular at the gym and had previously completed demanding police assessments without any complications. “He was very fit,” his brother explained, adding that they expected him to excel in the physical tests.
Tragedy at Training
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, Zwelethu collapsed while running at Ruimsig Stadium and was brought in unresponsive. Emergency Management Services attempted CPR but could not revive him. He was declared dead on the scene.
His passing comes just days after another trainee, 24-year-old Marvellous Michael Nyambi from Rabie Ridge, also lost his life during the same recruitment process. Nyambi reportedly suffered from heat exhaustion before being hospitalised, but he too did not survive.
A post-mortem confirmed that Zwelethu died of natural causes, although his family has voiced concern and called for more clarity on what happened.
A Community in Mourning
The Tekete family has arranged a prayer service in Braamfischerville, Soweto, where he lived, to honour his memory. His final resting place will be in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, where relatives and friends are preparing to bid him farewell on 13 September.
The news of his death has sparked widespread sadness, with many taking to social media to express condolences and share tributes to his achievements. For many, the loss feels heavier knowing Zwelethu’s potential was cut short at such a young age.
Remembering Zwelethu
Beyond his achievements and titles, Zwelethu is remembered most dearly as a father and son. His family says they were counting on his success to help support them. His legacy, though short, is marked by determination, community pride, and the love he carried for his children.
