In South African football, some of the most powerful figures work quietly behind the scenes. Angelo Tsichlas was one such giant – a visionary who helped guide Mamelodi Sundowns into the modern era, long before the trophies and headlines arrived.

Tragically, Angelo passed away in a car accident on Tuesday, 25 June 2025, in Pretoria. Though his name may not have always been in the spotlight, his influence is deeply woven into the fabric of the club known as The Brazilians.

A Builder, Not a Bystander

While Angelo held the title of chairman at Sundowns, it was his wife, Nastasia Tsichlas – famously known as the “Iron Lady” of South African football – who often stood in the public eye. Angelo preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, but make no mistake: he was no silent partner. His steadfast leadership helped shape the club during a pivotal chapter in its history, laying the groundwork for one of South Africa’s most successful football institutions.

The Foundation That Made the Future Possible

The Tsichlas family, alongside the Krok brothers, took over the club during a challenging transition, acquiring it from Standard Bank, who had previously taken ownership from the legendary Zola Mahobe. It was a time of uncertainty, but Angelo navigated it with clarity and conviction.

Under their stewardship, Sundowns evolved – not just known for their flair on the pitch, but for stability and strength off it. This solid foundation paved the way for the club’s rise to continental dominance under current owner Patrice Motsepe, who also serves as CAF president. Motsepe paid a heartfelt tribute:

“Angelo and Natasha made enormous contributions to the development and growth of Mamelodi Sundowns. We are all immensely grateful for the foundations they laid that underpin the club’s current success.”

Champagne at Loftus: A Moment to Remember

Known for his serious demeanour and no-nonsense approach with players and officials alike, Angelo also had a softer, joyous side. One unforgettable moment came when Sundowns clinched their first Castle Premiership title. As players celebrated at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Angelo dashed to the press box, champagne in hand, calling out to veteran football journalist Edgar Dassie:

“Edgar, come down! You’re part of this – we’re celebrating!”

It was a rare, heartfelt moment from a man who usually kept his emotions guarded – a testament to how deeply the club meant to him.

A Family Loss Felt Far Beyond the Game

Angelo’s passing comes at a difficult time for the Tsichlas family. Nastasia is currently supporting her sister Maria, who is caring for her husband, Peter Kotroulus – former team manager during the family’s tenure at Sundowns and currently battling illness.

As of publishing, funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

A Lasting Imprint on South African Football

Angelo Tsichlas never sought the spotlight, but his legacy lives on – in the culture, pride, and structure that define Mamelodi Sundowns today. Every match, every trophy, every moment of success is built on the foundation he helped create.

May his memory be a blessing.
