Betway Premiership wide open after dramatic midweek action leaves four teams tied at the top

Betway Premiership heats up with four way tie
Two weeks into the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, the table already looks like a nail-biter. Kaizer Chiefs, Durban City, Marumo Gallants and Sekhukhune United are level on six points after an electrifying first midweek round that had fans buzzing from Polokwane to Durban.
For Amakhosi supporters, it’s a rare early-season delight. After last year’s turbulent campaign, a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at the FNB Stadium — sealed by Siphesihle Ndlovu’s first goal for the club — has given them back-to-back wins and a share of the top spot.
New boys and old guards making noise
Durban City are proving they’re not here just to make up the numbers. Fresh from promotion, they stunned Chippa United with a late Joslin Kamatuka strike to maintain their perfect start in the top flight. Sekhukhune United kept pace after veteran striker Bradley Grobler’s decisive goal downed TS Galaxy.
Golden Arrows also got their first points on the board in style, with Junior Dion’s stunner enough to beat Richards Bay in a KZN derby. Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC had to settle for a point each in Seshego after trading goals through Kgomotso Mosadi and Langelihle Phili.
Tuesday drama and a Soweto stunner
The midweek drama began on Tuesday when Marumo Gallants pulled off a thrilling 2-1 win over Orlando Pirates at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. Jaisen Clifford’s injury-time winner sent the home crowd into raptures and left the Buccaneers nursing a second straight defeat — something that’s only happened once before in their PSL history, back in 2007/08.
Elsewhere, Orbit College made history with their first-ever top-flight win, edging Siwelele 1-0 thanks to Letsie Koapeng. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns looked business as usual with a clinical 2-0 victory over AmaZulu, courtesy of Iqraam Rayners and Tashreeq Matthews.
Fans already talking title race
Social media lit up after the final whistles, with Chiefs fans daring to dream of a turnaround season, Gallants supporters reveling in their underdog heroics, and Durban City’s rapid rise making them an early fan favourite.
With the MTN8 semifinals taking centre stage this weekend, league action will resume on 19-20 August — and if the opening rounds are anything to go by, this season’s title race could be one of the most unpredictable in years.
