Messi, Mzansi and MetLife: The New FIFA Club World Cup is Bigger, Louder and Finally Global

Football is about to get a lot louder.
When the revamped FIFA Club World Cup kicks off on 14 June 2025 in the United States, it will do so with a record-breaking 32 clubs, 63 matches, 12 stadiums, and a splash of Mzansi magic. For the first time ever, club football’s most exclusive competition is getting the full World Cup treatment, complete with a month-long spectacle, global superstars, knockout drama and even a blockbuster half-time show.
And yes, our very own Mamelodi Sundowns will be flying the South African flag.
The New Format: A Month of Mayhem
FIFA has scrapped the old, short-format tournament in favour of something much bolder. This year’s edition will mimic the men’s FIFA World Cup:
-
32 teams
-
8 groups of 4
-
Top 2 in each group move on to the Round of 16
-
Then straight knockouts to the final
From June 14 to July 13, the tournament will run across 11 American cities, transforming stadiums into global stages. Hard Rock Stadium in Miami hosts the opener, and the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the final — which comes with a music twist (more on that later).
Which Clubs Made It?
If you support a big European team, there’s a good chance they’re in. UEFA leads the way with giants like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and PSG. But fans from the South won’t be left behind.
South America’s elite will feature — Palmeiras, Flamengo, River Plate, Boca Juniors, along with CONCACAF clubs like LAFC, Pachuca, and host club Inter Miami, where a certain Lionel Messi still pulls the strings.
For African fans, the presence of Al Ahly, Espérance, Wydad Casablanca, and our very own Mamelodi Sundowns brings a much-needed continental flair to a historically Eurocentric competition.
Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and former champs like Liverpool and Barcelona didn’t make the cut. FIFA’s ranking-based selection system has proven unforgiving this time round.
The Stadiums: 12 Iconic Venues Across the US
From the palm trees of California to the bright lights of New York, here’s where the magic will happen:
-
Miami (Hard Rock Stadium) – Opening match
-
New Jersey (MetLife Stadium) – Grand Final
-
Pasadena (Rose Bowl)
-
Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
-
Charlotte (Bank of America Stadium)
-
Seattle (Lumen Field)
-
Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field)
-
Orlando (Camping World Stadium + Inter&Co Stadium)
-
Washington, D.C. (Audi Field)
-
Nashville (GEODIS Park)
-
Cincinnati (TQL Stadium)
Expect full houses, passionate fans and a flavour of American showmanship wrapped in football tradition.
Entertainment Meets Football: A Final Like No Other
The final — set for 13 July at MetLife Stadium — isn’t just about football. In a move that merges sport and pop culture, J Balvin, Doja Cat, and Tems will headline the half-time performance, with production overseen by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. It’s giving Super Bowl energy, but with boots and balls instead of helmets.
Social media is already buzzing. Football Twitter is divided over the “festivalisation” of the sport, but younger fans seem thrilled at the idea of Doja Cat and Haaland being on the same billing.
A South African Spotlight: Sundowns in the Mix
For South Africans, the real excitement lies in seeing Mamelodi Sundowns in the mix. Known for their fluid football and recent continental success, the Tshwane-based side will test themselves against the world’s best — in front of global scouts, coaches, and fans. It’s not just a chance to compete; it’s a chance to prove that African club football belongs on the world’s biggest stage.
With Messi, Mbappé, Haaland, and yes, even Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile, on the same fixture list, this Club World Cup is not just football it’s a big flex.
FIFA Club World Cup 2025, Game Changer or Flop?
This isn’t just a new format. It’s a new frontier. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is a gamble to globalise the club game in a way that finally mirrors the World Cup magic. Whether it succeeds or stumbles, it’s going to be massive.
And for fans from Joburg to Jersey, that’s something worth watching.
