Doohan Out, Colapinto In as Alpine Restructures

Argentine driver Franco Colapinto will take over the second Alpine Formula One seat for the next five races, replacing rookie Jack Doohan. The decision comes amid ongoing struggles for the French team and follows the sudden resignation of team principal Oliver Oakes.

Colapinto’s promotion begins at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, where he will partner lead driver Pierre Gasly. Alpine currently sits ninth in the constructors’ standings after six races in the 2025 season, with Gasly scoring all seven of the team’s points while Doohan has yet to finish in the top 10.

Five-race evaluation

Alpine confirmed Colapinto will race through to the British Grand Prix in July, after which his performance will be reviewed. Doohan will remain part of the team as the primary reserve driver during this time.

The Argentine had been linked to Doohan’s seat since Alpine signed him from Williams over the off-season.

Leadership shake-up

Wednesday’s announcement came just hours after Oakes resigned from his position less than a year into his tenure. Alpine said in a statement that it had accepted his resignation “with immediate effect.”

The team added that Flavio Briatore, currently serving as executive advisor, will also take on Oakes’ responsibilities.

Oakes’ exit is the latest chapter in a turbulent period for Alpine, formerly known as Renault. When he joined in 2024, the former racing driver aimed to move the team back into contention as a strong midfield competitor, but admitted late last year that performance needed to improve.

“There are no silver bullets,” he said at the time. “We ultimately have to produce a better car.”
