Johannesburg’s Jason Evans Wins World Bronze in Bowls

Jason Evans, the veteran lawn bowler from Johannesburg’s Morningside Country Club, has added yet another achievement to his international career, winning a bronze medal at the 2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships in Scotland. Now, with global recognition secured, Evans has turned his attention to a personal milestone: winning the Bowls South Africa Men’s Open Singles title.
A Global Podium Finish for a Proud Johannesburg Bowler
Evans represented South Africa against the best bowlers from 32 countries during the six-day tournament, earning a spot on the podium in the men’s singles event.
“To be ranked third in the world is incredible,” Evans said. “It puts South African bowls – and Johannesburg – on the map. We’re no longer seen as underdogs.”
The result continues a strong international run for Team South Africa and reinforces the country’s status as a rising power in world bowls.
Lifelong Journey From Wales to Johannesburg Greens
Evans was born in Wales but moved to South Africa at age 11, where he took up bowls at 15, inspired by his father. He has since amassed over 300 international caps, representing South Africa for more than 15 years.
“Johannesburg has always been home for my bowling career. Morningside Country Club gave me the environment to grow, compete, and thrive.”
He believes that bowls in South Africa has momentum, but increased media exposure and youth participation are crucial to keep it growing.

The Missing Piece: SA Open Singles Title
Evans has claimed national titles across every major discipline – except the singles, where he’s been runner-up twice. Now, he’s focused on changing that narrative at the 2025 Bowls SA Men’s Open in Port Elizabeth this May.
“Winning the singles would complete the puzzle. I’ve come close before. This time, I want to finish the job.”
Preparation Grounded in Johannesburg’s Greens
Evans continues to fine-tune his game at Morningside Country Club, but his approach is more tactical than purely physical.
“I don’t just put in hours. I focus on purposeful training. If my game feels sharp, I switch to mental preparation instead. The mind is just as important.”
He also acknowledges that conditions in Port Elizabeth can be unpredictable due to the coastal winds.
“I’ve played there before and won. If the weather holds up, I feel confident.”
Support from Johannesburg’s Bowls Community
Evans credits his Morningside teammates and Johannesburg’s local bowls supporters for helping him stay focused and motivated.
“The support back home means everything. Winning brings pride not just to me but to the club and our city.”

Looking Ahead: More International Ambitions
Though focused on the SA Open for now, Evans isn’t ruling out future international appearances – including World Bowls and the Commonwealth Games.
“If I keep performing, I hope to stay on the selectors’ radar. I love representing South Africa. I’ll keep going as long as they’ll have me.”
Jason Evans’s journey from a teenage bowler in Johannesburg to one of the top-ranked players in the world is a story of perseverance and passion. With his recent World Bowls bronze in hand and a singular focus on capturing the elusive SA Open Singles title, 2025 could be the year he completes his national crown.
Whether on the world stage or at home in Morningside, Evans continues to inspire the next generation of South African bowlers – and put Johannesburg lawn bowls in the global spotlight.
