‘I’ll Keep It in My Heart Forever’: Jennifer Echegini’s Wafcon Winner Seals Nigeria’s Comeback Glory
From doubt to destiny, the 24-year-old’s first career trophy becomes a lifelong memory.
Jennifer Echegini will not soon forget the moment her foot met fate in the 88th minute of the WAFCON 2024 final. Nigeria, trailing 2–0 at halftime in front of a roaring Moroccan crowd, looked headed for heartbreak. However, one stunning goal, her first tournament-winning strike, changed everything and etched her name into African football history.
“If I’m ever doubting myself, I’ll think of this,” the Nigerian midfielder told the BBC. “It’s my first trophy ever. I’ll carry this moment with me forever.”
What a moment it was.
From Down and Out to Champions Again
At Rabat’s packed Olympic Stadium, the Super Falcons were chasing shadows early on. Hosts Morocco surged ahead through first-half goals by Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, sending their fans into a frenzy. The second half, however, told a very different story.
It began with Esther Okoronkwo converting a penalty that reignited belief. She did even more: setting up two additional goals, including the late cross that Echegini fired home with poise and power. Nigeria had turned the impossible into the unforgettable.
“You’re 2–0 down in a final,” Echegini said. “You either play with fear and lose, or you fight with everything. We fought.”
Mission X: Accomplished
Nigeria’s campaign carried the codename ‘Mission X,’ a nod to their dream of clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. That dream came alive in a dramatic comeback the team, and the nation, will remember for years to come.
President Bola Tinubu joined in the celebration with a heartfelt video call after the final whistle. He hailed the squad’s “spectacular” performance and praised the Super Falcons as a “pride to your generation.”
“You’ve lifted our spirits. You’ve achieved what the nation dreamed of and prayed for,” he said.
Esther Okoronkwo: Quiet Storm with Loud Impact
While Echegini’s goal stole the headlines, Esther Okoronkwo was the engine behind Nigeria’s second-half surge. Her tournament tally, two goals and six assists, highlights her pivotal role in the team’s success.
“It was all or nothing,” Okoronkwo explained. “We had to change our approach. We came out fighting.”
That fighting spirit is nothing new for the Super Falcons. According to former star Desire Oparanozie, herself a four-time WAFCON champion, the team’s response under pressure reflected the mindset of true champions.
“That mental toughness and fight, that’s Nigeria,” she said. “Ten finals, ten wins. That’s not luck. That’s legacy.”
Morocco’s Pain, Nigeria’s Power
For Morocco, the loss was especially bitter. It marked their second consecutive WAFCON final defeat on home soil, despite bringing in 2023 Women’s World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda to lead the charge.
“We touched the cup with our hands,” Moroccan forward Sakina Ouzraoui said. “But not strongly enough.”
She remains defiant:
“We are Morocco. We will come back stronger, and next time, we’ll win.”
A Moment That Transcends the Pitch
Echegini’s goal was more than just a match-winner. For many young girls across the continent, it served as a moment of inspiration, proof that resilience pays off, belief matters, and African women’s football continues to rise.
In a sport that has often overlooked female athletes, Nigeria’s 2024 WAFCON story stands as a powerful reminder of what happens when talent meets opportunity and heart.
“Whenever I feel doubt,” Echegini said, “I’ll think of that goal, that moment, that joy, and I’ll know I belong.”
