Kaizer Chiefs fans are smiling again. Two games, two wins, and a sense that maybe — just maybe — this could be the season Amakhosi finally begin to turn the corner. But while the Glamour Boys have made a confident start to the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League campaign, not everyone is ready to pop the champagne.

Early Momentum Lifts Chiefs

A 2-0 win over Stellenbosch on opening weekend set the tone, followed by a gritty 1-0 midweek victory against Polokwane City, courtesy of a sharp finish from new signing Siphesihle Ndlovu. The midfielder’s debut goal secured back-to-back victories and gave Chiefs six valuable points to open the season.

For fans, it was the kind of start that sparks chants of “Amakhosi 4 Life” across Johannesburg taverns and Twitter timelines. After years of inconsistency, even a small run of form feels like a reason to dream.

Bongani Khumalo’s Reality Check

Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo, however, is calling for caution. Speaking on SuperSport’s ExtraTime, Khumalo praised the results but warned the players not to lose sight of the bigger picture.

“It’s very good, but it is important for the players to keep their feet on the ground,” Khumalo said. “It’s a long season, not a cup competition. Performances matter. Against Stellenbosch, the performance wasn’t great but the result was. Against Polokwane, they improved in the second half, but there is still work to be done.”

His words strike at the heart of what has haunted Chiefs for over a decade: flashes of brilliance, followed by costly dips in form.

Chiefs, Sundowns, And Pirates In The Mix

The early table paints an interesting picture. Chiefs sit second with six points, level with surprise leaders Durban City. More notably, they’re ahead of champions Mamelodi Sundowns and bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, who remain winless under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

For many Amakhosi supporters, just seeing Sundowns and Pirates below them brings an extra layer of satisfaction. But veterans like Khumalo know the PSL marathon is decided in consistency, not August glory.

Public Reaction: Cautious Optimism

On social media, the mood is a mix of excitement and guarded realism. “Finally, something to celebrate, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: “Siphesihle Ndlovu is already looking like a brilliant signing. Long may it continue!”

Yet, many echo Khumalo’s words: “This isn’t the time to brag. Chiefs must build momentum and stay focused. We’ve seen false dawns before.”

What’s Next?

Chiefs’ next fixtures will test whether this strong start is the foundation for a genuine title challenge, or just another hot start destined to fizzle. For now, the yellow and black faithful can enjoy the buzz, even if the message from the old guard is clear: celebrate with your heart, but keep your feet firmly on the ground.
