Kaizer Chiefs may have secured another victory at FNB Stadium, but assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef believes the team left too much on the table in front of goal.

Amakhosi edged Richards Bay FC 1-0 on Tuesday night, with Gaston Sirino’s strike ensuring a third straight league win to kick off the season. While the result keeps Chiefs’ perfect start intact, Ben Youssef was clear that the performance should have been more convincing.

A Win That Felt Too Narrow

From the opening whistle, Chiefs set the tone with high intensity and created a flurry of chances. For 15 minutes, it looked as if a comfortable win was on the cards. Yet once Sirino broke the deadlock in the second half, the hosts eased off instead of driving the result home.

“Our players started to enjoy the moment with the fans, which is understandable, but we reminded them after the game that you need to be ruthless,” Ben Youssef told reporters. “You have to kill the game off with a second goal.”

Defensive Strength a Silver Lining

Richards Bay offered little threat going forward, choosing to sit deep and frustrate Chiefs rather than chase the match. That meant Amakhosi’s backline had few anxious moments, something Ben Youssef took pride in.

“Whether we win 1-0 or 2-0, the important thing is to win. Three points, a clean sheet, good defensive organisation – that is what matters,” he added.

The Bigger Picture

For fans, the relief is that Chiefs are showing early signs of improvement compared to last season’s stuttering start. New signings are still waiting to make their full impact, and Ben Youssef is confident they will raise the level even higher once integrated into the system.

Social media reaction after the final whistle reflected mixed emotions: excitement over the perfect record, but plenty of comments echoing the coach’s call for sharper finishing. “Three wins in a row, but we can’t afford to waste these chances later in the season,” one fan wrote on X.

For a club desperate to end its silverware drought, grinding out results is a good foundation. But as Ben Youssef insists, Chiefs must develop a ruthless streak if they are to turn early-season promise into genuine title contention.
