Lando Norris has officially taken control of the 2025 Formula 1 championship race after a flawless victory at the Mexico Grand Prix, outpacing teammate Oscar Piastri to lead the standings for the first time since April.
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez crowd witnessed pure dominance as Norris led from start to finish, shrugging off early chaos in Turn 1 involving Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen. With the thin Mexico City air testing both drivers and engines, Norris kept his cool in a high-altitude thriller that saw McLaren once again outclass its rivals on strategy and pace.
His win wasn’t just another notch in his careerit was a statement. The Brit’s 10th career victory came at a pivotal moment, marking a return to the championship lead by just one point over Piastri.
“Beautiful weekend. Incredible result,” Norris said over the team radio after crossing the line, his voice echoing through the stadium section. “It’s one weekend at a time. I’m happy, I’m focused on myself.”
Behind Norris, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc fought tooth and nail to defend second place against a charging Verstappen. The Dutchman, who had gambled on a late switch to soft tyres, looked poised to overtake until a virtual safety car froze the race with just a few laps remaining.
“It was hectic at the startI almost crashed,” Verstappen admitted afterward. “Once we went on the softs, the car came alive, but sometimes the safety car works against you.”
Leclerc was candid about his relief, telling reporters, “I was very happy about the VSC at the end! My tyres were gone, Max was coming fast. It saved me.”
The underdog story of the day belonged to Haas rookie Oliver Bearman, who finished a sensational fourthmatching the best result in Haas’ nine-year history. His composure under pressure kept Piastri behind him in the closing stages, turning what could have been a forgettable afternoon into a breakout performance that drew praise across social media.
“Bearman is the future!” one fan posted on X. “Holding off McLaren like that? Unreal.”
While Norris celebrated, Oscar Piastri’s fifth-place finish told a different story. Since his Saudi Arabian win early in the season, Piastri has struggled to maintain his edge, and Mexico was another reminder that the championship momentum has shifted.
The Australian’s frustration grew as he battled Mercedes’ George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, only breaking free thanks to a rapid McLaren pit stop. Meanwhile, questions about team dynamics resurfaced after September’s Monza controversy, when McLaren asked Piastri to yield to Norrisa move many fans believe marked the start of Norris’ resurgence.
For Lewis Hamilton, it was another bitter weekend. Despite starting third, a clash with Verstappen saw him pushed wide, leading to a penalty that dropped him down to eighth. His radio summed up his frustration: “That’s such bulls***, man.”
Ferrari, however, walked away satisfied. With Leclerc’s podium and Hamilton salvaging points, the Scuderia continues to look like the dark horse in the constructors’ race.
Norris’ win has reset the Formula 1 title battle with four rounds and one sprint race remaining. He now leads Piastri by just one point, with Verstappen trailing by 36. It’s a razor-thin margin that promises a nail-biting end to the season.
From Mexico’s electric crowd to fans across the world, the message was clear: Formula 1’s next world champion might just wear papaya.
