From Kokstad to Gibraltar: Mbali Diphoko’s Netball Dream Takes Flight
At just 18 years old, Mbali Diphoko is about to experience a career-defining moment. Hailing from the small town of Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal, the rising star has made it into South Africa’s final 15-player squad for the Netball Youth World Cup, which kicks off in Gibraltar this September. For Mbali, it’s more than just a tournament. It’s the realisation of a dream stitched together with grit, talent, and a little small-town magic.
A Shot Worth Taking
Mbali’s inclusion in the Under-21 Baby Proteas didn’t happen by chance. After a stellar season playing for the Kokstad Jaguars Netball Club, her hard work finally paid off with a national call-up. Now, standing on the brink of her first international tournament, she’s brimming with a mix of nerves and excitement.
“The World Cup is a huge milestone for us as a team. I am both nervous and excited for the competition and for the tough teams we are going to play against,” she shared in a recent interview with SABC Sport.
The Baby Proteas will carry the hopes of South Africa as they step onto the global court. Mbali, known for her precision as a goal shooter, is determined to do her part.
“Being part of the Spar Baby Proteas is a dream come true. It validates all the work, dedication, and perseverance I’ve put in this year,” she said.
Inspired by Greatness
Every young athlete has someone they admire. For Mbali, that person is Kamogelo Maseko, one of the Spar Proteas’ most respected players.
“Growing up, I always looked up to Kamogelo Maseko. Her work ethic, passion, and skill on the court inspired me to chase my netball dream,” Mbali said.
That admiration has clearly fuelled her journey, and now, she hopes to follow in Maseko’s footsteps, not just by wearing the national colours but by making a lasting impact on and off the court.
Gibraltar Awaits
With only two weeks to go until the World Cup kicks off, the team is deep in preparation. Mbali’s focus? Helping her squad bring home a medal.
“My goal is to contribute to the team’s success, which I hope will be a podium finish.”
In a country where netball continues to rise in popularity, especially after the senior Proteas’ strong global showings, Mbali’s story reflects the passion and potential brewing in South Africa’s youth leagues. From dusty courts in Kokstad to the international arena, her journey is proof that dreams backed by hard work can land you anywhere, even in Gibraltar.
