The Springbok Women kick off their Rugby World Cup campaign on Sunday in Northampton, and Nadine Roos has made it clear: South Africa are here to make a statement.

The utility back believes the pain of past losses to Brazil on the sevens circuit will fuel the Boks as they prepare for their first-ever fifteens showdown with the South Americans.

Lessons From the Sevens Circuit

Last year, South Africa met Brazil four times in the HSBC SVNS series and managed just one win. Roos, who featured in those clashes alongside teammates Ayanda Malinga, Eloise Webb, Zintle Mpupha and Sizophila Solontsi, says those encounters left unfinished business.

“We punished them at times in sevens, but they also showed their quality. This time, on the world’s biggest stage, I’d love to pay them back,” she explained.

Brazil Bring Sevens Firepower

Almost 80 percent of Brazil’s World Cup squad are regulars on the sevens circuit. That means pace, flair, and unpredictability will be central to their game plan.

Roos admits their speed is a threat but insists the Boks have the blueprint to counter it.

“If you give them time and space, they’ll run circles around you. But they don’t like the physical contact. That’s where we can punish themby shutting down their space and putting pressure on their playmakers,” she said.

A Milestone Moment for South African Women’s Rugby

Beyond the tactics, this match carries symbolic weight. Women’s rugby in South Africa has been gaining momentum with greater visibility, grassroots growth, and players like Roos becoming role models for young girls.

A victory over Brazil would not only boost World Cup hopes but also spark fresh belief back home. Fans on social media have already rallied around the squad, with one supporter posting: “The whole of Mzansi is behind you.”

Why This Opener Matters

South Africa and Brazil are both seen as outsiders in a competition traditionally dominated by powerhouses like England and New Zealand. A win in Northampton could set the tone for the Springbok Women’s entire campaign.

For Roos, it’s also about personal redemption. “This is where you want to deliveron the best world stage you can play at,” she said.
