Proteas Women Set Their Sights On World Cup Glory With Renewed Confidence

The Proteas Women are off to India with one clear mission: to finally bring the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup trophy home.
A Team In A Good Space
Speaking at a lively send-off in Johannesburg this week, all-rounder Suné Luus shared that the team is in the right frame of mind as the countdown to the global showpiece begins.
“It’s been a very good year of build-up,” she said, emphasising how their training has been sharpened with the tournament in mind. “All the girls are in a really good space.”
The World Cup, which kicks off on 30 September, will be hosted in India, a nation where cricket is almost a religion. For Luus and her teammates, playing in front of passionate crowds is both an opportunity and a challenge.
Building Towards History
South Africa has often fallen just short in major tournaments, and the Proteas Women have yet to reach a World Cup final. Luus is clear about their ambition this time.
“The first goal is to reach the final, which is something we have never done before. The ultimate goal is to lift that trophy,” she said. “But before then, many things need to fall in place.”
Her words echo the hunger within the squad to break new ground and give South Africa a moment of sporting history.
Backing From Home
The send-off, hosted by Cricket South Africa and their sponsor Suzuki, was more than a formality. It was a show of unity and belief in the team’s potential. Supporters at the event celebrated the players, and social media buzzed with messages of encouragement, with fans urging the Proteas Women to “bring it home.”
In a country where women’s cricket has steadily gained recognition, this World Cup feels different. The Proteas Women aren’t just participants they’re contenders.
The Road Ahead
With early preparations in India to adapt to conditions, the team is setting itself up for the best possible start. For many South Africans, the dream of seeing the Proteas Women lift the trophy doesn’t feel far-fetched anymore.
As Luus put it, the mindset is clear: “We’re preparing really well, and we’re ready.”
The Proteas Women’s journey begins at the end of the month, but the hope they carry from home has already set the stage for what could be a historic campaign
