Rassie’s Rumble: Bulls Eye Glory in Dublin Showdown with Bok Spots on the Line

A URC title isn’t the only thing on the line when the Vodacom Bulls face Leinster in Saturday’s Grand Final at Croke Park. For several players in blue, it’s also a last-minute audition, and Rassie Erasmus is in the front row.
While most South Africans will be watching to see if the Bulls can bring home silverware, Erasmus has made it clear he’ll be scouting for green and gold potential. And nothing gets players moving quite like the promise of a Springbok call-up.
The Bulls Aren’t Just Playing Leinster, They’re Playing Ireland
It’s no secret this is a David vs Goliath battle. Leinster, stacked with Irish internationals (plus All Black Jordie Barrett and Springbok RG Snyman on the bench), have all the tools of a Test team. But Jake White’s Bulls have grit, depth and a little extra motivation in the form of national selection.
Rassie dropped names this week. Notably Embrose Papier the elusive scrumhalf who once had a taste of Bok rugby in 2018, and has quietly been outplaying rivals ever since. Then there’s Sebastian de Klerk, who scorched the Sharks in last weekend’s semi-final, and David Kriel, a quiet force in midfield that’s hard to ignore. “They’re not just fringe players anymore,” Erasmus hinted. “These guys are pushing hard.”
Jake White’s Selections are Helping Shape the Bok Picture
Rassie wasn’t shy in tipping his cap to Jake White, saying the Bulls’ experimentation this season has been helpful in Bok planning. Whether it’s Jan-Hendrik Wessels covering both hooker and loose head, or Ruan Nortje captaining from the flank, the Pretoria outfit has given Erasmus headaches in the best possible way.
“They’re doing things we can build on,” said Rassie.
With Nortje now playing at No 7, it’s opened up starting spots for rising talent JF van Heerden and the highly-rated Cobus Wiese, who recently returned to SA and immediately earned Bok group recognition.
Leinster Are Strong But the Bulls Have Bite
Make no mistake, Leinster are favourites. They’re at home. They’ve got Barrett, Ringrose and Josh van der Flier all back in the starting XV. But the Bulls have a pack built for disruption. Wilco Louw and Wessels are front-row wrecking balls, while Marco van Staden is the perfect foil for Ireland’s breakdown specialists.
And Marcell Coetzee? He’s back at No 8, a position he once dominated for Ulster, on Irish soil no less.
White’s team may not have as many Boks as the Sharks, but maybe that’s the secret weapon. Hunger. Point to prove. Players like Papier, De Klerk and Kriel aren’t living off past glories — they’re chasing new ones.
Timing is Everything and This Year, it’s on the Bulls’ Side
Last year’s URC final saw the Bulls distracted, playing the same day the Springboks were in action. This time? There’s a two-week window before the Boks face The Barbarians, and that’s opened the door to a little Rassie-shaped incentive.
Notably, Erasmus confirmed that Bulls players won’t feature in the first Springbok fixture due to short turnaround times. But, the bigger Bok squad announcement looms — and a stellar performance in Dublin could be the ticket in.
South Africans Rally Online
Local rugby fans have taken to social media with rallying cries for the Bulls, many echoing Rassie’s sentiment that a Bulls win would be more than a victory — it would be a statement. One fan wrote on X, “Let’s be honest — it’s Bulls vs Ireland, and we want the underdogs to make noise!”
Even those with ties to Leinster, like former Bok assistant coach Jacques Nienaber (now with the Irish club), are caught in the middle. “My heart says Leinster, but my flag says SA,” one fan joked.
Final Whistle Prediction?
Expect a cagey arm-wrestle early on. The Bulls will throw everything at the set pieces and breakdowns, and for a while, they might just rattle Leinster. But the Irish depth and home support could stretch the lead in the final quarter.
Whatever the scoreboard says, this match will reveal just how strong South African franchise rugby really is — and who’s ready to wear the Springbok jersey in the weeks to come.
