At just 18 years old, Ruttger Schliesser has achieved what many seasoned bowlers only dream of: a bronze medal at the prestigious Gauteng Open U18 Singles, after just one year in the sport.

The tournament was held on 28 and 29 June 2025 at the historic Pretoria Old Bowls Club, attracting some of the province’s most promising young players. But it was Schliesser’s calm, focused presence that quietly turned heads; no drama, just determination and enjoyment of the game.

It Started as Family Time

Ruttger’s journey into lawn bowls didn’t begin with podium dreams. It began at home. Inspired by his parents, Heinz and Michelè Schliesser, he started playing simply to spend more time with them at their local Morningside Country Club.

“I started playing to spend more time with them, and that really motivated me to get involved,” he said.

What started as a way to connect quickly turned into something more serious and more rewarding.

No Expectations, Just Enjoyment

Heading into the Gauteng Open, Ruttger’s mindset was refreshingly relaxed.

“Honestly, I went there just to have fun,” he admitted. “I didn’t expect much, except for experience.”

But with a cool head and sharp instincts, he clinched his opening game by scoring three shots on the final end, a clutch moment that propelled him through the tournament with confidence.

Beating the Best and Learning Along the Way

After winning his section, Ruttger faced the defending champion and managed to defeat her, a major milestone. Though his run ended with a loss to a standout player from the Pretoria Old Boys Bowling Club, his performance earned him a well-deserved spot on the podium.

“This was my third big tournament, and I’ve got two medals now,” he said. “In my first year, I think that’s quite impressive.”

Next Steps: Matric First, Then the World

For now, Ruttger’s focus is on completing matric, but he has his sights set on even bigger goals.

“I hope to represent South Africa someday,” he said, hinting at a dream to compete at the Commonwealth Games.

Why It Matters

In a country where rugby, soccer, and cricket dominate the youth sports landscape, Ruttger’s journey is a refreshing reminder that passion, family support, and dedication can lead to success in less spotlighted arenas.

His story also reflects something uniquely South African, where young talent emerges from unexpected places, and where sports like bowls continue to thrive thanks to community, legacy, and heart.
