Fox stuns with 50-foot chip to win Myrtle Beach Classic and seal PGA breakthrough

Ryan Fox secured his first-ever PGA Tour victory in dramatic fashion on Sunday, chipping in a remarkable 50 feet from the fringe to win the Myrtle Beach Classic. The victory, which came after a thrilling three-way playoff, not only gave Fox his first PGA title but also earned him a coveted spot at the PGA Championship starting this Thursday. The emotional win was made even sweeter as Fox dedicated it to his wife, Anneke Ryff, who had joked just days before the tournament that a trophy would make the perfect Mother’s Day gift.
The 38-year-old New Zealander, who has long lived in the shadow of his legendary rugby-playing father, was overjoyed by the win. “To have my wife and kids here is amazing,” Fox said, clearly moved by the moment. This victory marked a significant turning point in Fox’s PGA career, following a challenging start to his U.S. tour journey. After securing a final-round score of five-under-par 66, Fox managed to secure his spot in the playoff after Mackenzie Hughes faltered at the 18th and Harry Higgs could only manage a par on the final hole.
Fox’s victory came as a huge relief, given his rocky start to life on the PGA Tour. “I always felt I could compete with these guys,” Fox admitted, acknowledging the tough transition from the European Tour to the American circuit. This win at the Myrtle Beach Classic, however, gave him the confidence he needed to feel secure on the tour for the next two years.
The win not only brings him a long-awaited PGA title but also brings with it a two-year exemption on the tour. “In this game, you don’t win very often, and you don’t get job security very often either,” Fox reflected. “It’s certainly nice to have that. It feels like a monkey off my back.” With the PGA Championship just around the corner, Fox is hoping this breakthrough victory will propel him to even greater success on the PGA Tour.
