A dramatic and emotional night unfolded at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Tuesday as Banyana Banyana’s hopes of retaining the WAFCON crown were dashed. Nigeria triumphed 2-1, but it was Gabriela Salgado’s serious injury in the 83rd minute that brought the stadium to a stunned silence.

The defending champions fell behind early when Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the penalty spot just before half-time. South Africa rallied back in the second half, with Linda Motlhalo converting her own penalty to level the score in the 60th minute.

A moment of horror and hope

As the match approached extra time, Salgado collapsed on the pitch in a scene that visibly shook her teammates. She was quickly stretchered off and taken to a Casablanca hospital for assessment.

SAFA Chief Medical Officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya confirmed her condition mid-match:

“Gabby had a serious injury during the game and was rushed to hospital immediately for further assessment. We will give an update once all the facts are known.”

Moments after the injury, Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie netted the winner in added time, seizing a 2-1 victory and crushing South Africa’s title hopes.

Social media rallies around Salgado

Support for Salgado poured in across social platforms. SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan expressed solidarity, saying:

“We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Gabriela Salgado… Banyana Banyana fought very well. We are proud of your efforts.”

Fans also praised coach Dr Desiree Ellis, captain Refiloe Jane, and the team’s composure under pressure.

A bittersweet ending

Though Banyana’s WAFCON journey ends here, their performance reinforced their status among Africa’s top women’s teams. The final whistle brought heartbreak but also deep pride in how they fought, even as the scary injury to Salgado overshadowed the evening.
