Springboks Stay Grounded Ahead of Italy Clash in Turin
Even with momentum on their side, the Springboks are refusing to get comfortable. Damian Willemse says South Africa’s national team expects nothing less than a fierce battle when they face Italy in Turin this weekend.
Respecting The Opponent
Willemse’s tone was measured when speaking to SABC Sport a reminder that the world champions have learned never to take any side lightly. “Italy has really built their team all around,” he said. “They defend and attack well, and they have great players who can pull strings for them. It’s going to be a big challenge, especially in the air.”
The Boks come into this Test flying high, having won five consecutive matches, including a 32–17 victory over France despite playing most of the match with 14 men. Yet Italy, who beat Australia 26–19 in their last outing, have every reason to believe they can make life difficult for South Africa on home soil.
Familiar Foes With Fresh Energy
These two sides already met twice earlier this year during Italy’s tour of South Africa, where the Boks dominated both games even holding the Azzurri scoreless in Gqeberha. But as Willemse points out, that doesn’t mean this weekend will be easy.
“I’ve also played for the Stormers in Italy against Zebre Parma and Benetton,” he said. “They have good players who’ve made the step up. They’re well coached, and it’s going to be a huge battle on the field.”
Italy’s rugby system has quietly improved in recent seasons, producing powerful forwards and creative backs who’ve pushed top-tier teams harder than ever before. Their domestic franchises, Benetton and Zebre, have brought structure and confidence to the national setup.
Confidence Without Complacency
Inside the Bok camp, the mood is confident but disciplined. Head coach Rassie Erasmus and his squad know that away Tests in Europe often expose weaknesses especially when local crowds and chilly November conditions come into play.
South African fans on social media have praised Willemse’s maturity and calm leadership. Many see him as part of the “new generation” of Boks who balance flair with humility. One fan wrote on X, “That’s the mentality we need respect every opponent, no matter the rankings.”
Eyes On The Bigger Picture
Beyond the weekend, the Springboks’ focus remains on consistency as they build towards the 2026 season. Each Test is another step in refining combinations and testing depth, particularly with younger players like Willemse taking on leadership roles.
Still, for now, all eyes are on Turin. Italy may not have South Africa’s trophy cabinet, but they’ll have the home crowd, pride, and momentum and as Willemse said, “They’ll definitely bring it to us.”
