Stormers Lock in Future Talent: Porthen, Mars Among Five Young Stars to Sign Contract Extensions

The Stormers are doubling down on their commitment to home-grown excellence. This week, the franchise confirmed contract extensions for five of South Africa’s most exciting young rugby prospects — headlined by former Junior Springbok captain and tighthead prop Zachary Porthen.
Future stars JC Mars, Divan Fuller, Zach Porthen, Asad Moos and Kyle Smith have all signed contract extensions and are poised to continue their transition to the senior ranks.

Porthen, who trained with the senior team ahead of their United Rugby Championship (URC) clash against Benetton, is now in contention to feature against the Dragons at Cape Town Stadium next Saturday. With seasoned front-rowers Frans Malherbe and Brok Harris sidelined by injury and Neethling Fouché suspended, Porthen’s elevation may come sooner than expected.
Joining him on the Stormers’ extended roster are JC Mars, Divan Fuller, Asad Moos, and Kyle Smith — all considered standout talents in their positions. While Mars (utility back) and Smith (flyhalf) are currently on national duty with the Junior Springboks in the U20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha, they are poised to play important roles in the senior setup in the months and years ahead.
JC Mars already has a Stormers cap to his name — and a try — after an impressive debut against Harlequins in London.
“These players are the next generation that will continue to excite our supporters,” said Stormers director of rugby John Dobson. “Our goal has always been to retain local talent and give them the pathway to shine on the big stage.”
The five young guns remain eligible for Western Province in the national U21 championship, where they’ll aim to help secure a third consecutive title when the tournament kicks off this weekend.
Dobson emphasized that this recruitment strategy mirrors the success stories of players like Damian Willemse, Salmaan Moerat, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu — all of whom progressed through the WP system.

“We may not keep everyone, but we’re strategic about fortifying our squad in key positions,” Dobson added. “The pipeline of talent from our school system remains one of the best in the world.”
As the Stormers eye another URC playoff push, fans can take heart knowing the future is in very capable hands.
