Close But No Equaliser: Sundowns Push Dortmund to the Brink in Seven-Goal Thriller

Sundowns Fall Just Short in a Heat Fuelled Battle Against Dortmund
In what will go down as one of the most heart-racing matches of the 2025 Club World Cup so far, Mamelodi Sundowns pushed European giants Borussia Dortmund to the edge, falling just short in a 4-3 defeat under the blazing Cincinnati heat.
While the result may have gone against the South African champions, their performance told a different story — one of grit, flair, and a comeback that nearly rewrote the narrative. After a statement in against Ulsan HD, Sundowns knew they had to pull out all the stops against the 3rd ranked team in the competition, Borussia Dortmund.
A Dream Start, A Costly Error
It didn’t take long for Lucas Ribeiro to leave Dortmund’s defence stunned. Picking up the ball near the halfway line, the Sundowns star glided past two yellow shirts and fired a composed finish to give his side a surprise 11th-minute lead.
But celebrations barely had time to settle before a costly blunder from Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund the equaliser. His short pass found Felix Nmecha, who tapped home with ease.
Dortmund Take charge, But Not for Long
By half-time, the Germans had done what most expected: taken control. A pinpoint header from UCL top scorer Serhou Guirassy, followed by a composed strike from young Jobe Bellingham (yes, Jude’s brother), put Dortmund 3-1 up. An unfortunate own goal off Khuliso Mudau made it 4-1 shortly after the break. Many thought it was over.
But South African football fans know that Sundowns are a team that doesn’t go downs without a fight and did what doubter expected least.
Rayners and Mothiba Spark Hope
Iqraam Rayners, already making headlines this tournament, nearly scored with a strike that rattled the woodwork. Moments later, he made no mistake, heading home after Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick and an odd rebound gave him a second chance.
Then came Lebo Mothiba, the late substitute with a knack for dramatic finishes. In the 90th minute, he capitalised on a loose ball in the box and brought Sundowns within one. The roar from the travelling fans — and millions watching back home — said it all.
They believed. For a moment, everyone did.
“Pushed the Level of the Game to the Maximum”
Speaking after the final whistle, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso couldn’t hide his pride.
“We showed resilience. We pushed the level of the game to the maximum and matched one of the best teams in Europe,” he said. “This is what South African football is about.”
Even Dortmund coach Niko Kovac admitted his side had to battle “an opponent who could handle the heat better,” revealing that his substitutes had watched the first half from inside the dressing room to escape the searing pitchside temperatures.
A Performance That Earns More Than Just Respect

This wasn’t just a brave showing. It was a performance that showcased the rising quality of South African club football on a global stage. Mamelodi Sundowns didn’t just represent their badge — they represented a nation hungry for recognition in world football.
And while the scoreline didn’t reflect the comeback they nearly completed, Sundowns walked away with something just as valuable: belief.
