South African Microsoft users are feeling the pinch this month as the tech giant rolls out major price hikes for both Microsoft 365 and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions some increases hitting as high as 109%.

Big Jump for Microsoft 365 Subscribers

From Word and Excel to Outlook and PowerPoint, Microsoft’s productivity suite has become an everyday essential for millions of South Africans. But that convenience now comes with a steeper cost.

Emails sent to annual subscribers have confirmed that Microsoft 365 Family plans will jump from R1,499 to R1,999 per year, while Personal plans climb from R1,099 to R1,599. That’s a price jump of more than 45% for many local users.

Microsoft says the new rates reflect “12 years of added value” and “new innovations” specifically, the integration of its AI-powered Copilot assistant across Word, Excel, and Outlook. However, users who don’t want to pay for AI features can switch to the cheaper Microsoft 365 Classic plans via their subscription settings, though these options are being marketed as “limited offers.”

This marks another round of price hikes for South Africans, with Microsoft citing the weakened rand as a contributing factor in past adjustments.

What’s Behind the Game Pass Overhaul

The increases don’t stop with Office. Microsoft has also restructured its Xbox Game Pass subscription tiers globally, with the new pricing already active for South African gamers.

The rebranding comes with some bold changes and a few frustrations. The Game Pass Core plan is now called Game Pass Essential, rising from R99 to R139 per month. The Standard tier has become Premium, climbing from R149 to R199. Meanwhile, Game Pass Ultimate, which includes EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics, has jumped from R199 to R349 per month, a 75% increase.

But the biggest blow hits PC gamers, whose PC Game Pass fee has skyrocketed by 109%, from R119 to R249 per month.

Cloud Gaming Still Missing in South Africa

While Microsoft justifies the changes as an “upgrade” offering more cross-platform access, South African players have pointed out a major gap the cloud gaming feature is still not available locally, despite being included in global descriptions of the service.

The local gaming community has taken to social media to express frustration, arguing that they’re paying global prices without the full global experience.

“We’re paying more for less,” one Reddit user wrote on r/SouthAfricaGaming. “How can they justify this when cloud gaming doesn’t even work here yet?”

When Will the New Prices Apply?

For new customers, the revised prices are already in effect. Existing subscribers to both Microsoft 365 and Game Pass will see the increases reflected at their next renewal after 4 November 2025.

What It Means for South Africans

For many local households and small businesses, the changes represent another squeeze on budgets already stretched by rising costs. Tech industry watchers say it highlights a broader issue how global tech pricing often overlooks local economic realities.

Still, with Microsoft’s continued push toward AI integration, the company is clearly betting that users will view these increases as the cost of innovation rather than a cash grab.
