For nearly five decades, Bryanston Market has been more than just a shopping stop. It has become a Joburg institution, a space where families, friends, and even furry companions can gather in a tranquil, tree-shaded setting. Established in 1976, it proudly holds the title of Johannesburg’s longest-standing outdoor market and continues to be a sanctuary for conscious living, artisanal talent, and authentic community connection.

A Market Steeped in History and Heart

Tucked away on the grounds of Michael Mount Waldorf School in Bryanston, the market doubles as a fundraiser for the school while offering Joburgers a break from city bustle. With over 50 stalls, visitors can expect everything from fresh farm produce and handmade crafts to health products, textiles, and artisanal delicacies. The ethos has always been rooted in sustainability, local creativity, and community well-being.

Live Music, Moonlight Magic, and Family Time

Bryanston Market is open every Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm, when the gardens come alive with gentle live music. On Thursdays, the calming piano melodies of Michael Du Preez fill the Tea Garden, while Saturdays often feature lively local bands.

Then there’s the magic of the Moonlight Markets. As dusk settles, fairy lights twinkle overhead, music drifts through the air, and stalls glow warmly under the stars. Families flock here not just for shopping, but for the festive spirit that transforms the market into a nighttime wonderland.

The annual Christmas Night Markets add an extra dose of enchantment, running every Tuesday evening from 18 November to 16 December 2025. From 5pm to 9pm, expect festive shopping, crafts, and wholesome food in a pet-friendly setting.

A Conscious Twist: Workshops and Team Building

What sets Bryanston apart is its hands-on creative workshops. Popular experiences include candle dipping, where you handcraft colourful layered candles, and Kente weaving, an intricate Ghanaian technique known for its vibrant patterns. These activities aren’t just funthey also highlight cultural traditions and sustainable craft practices.

One of this year’s highlights is the annual Diwali Market, taking place on Saturday, 4 October 2025, from 10am to 9pm. It’s a full-day celebration of heritage and togetherness, featuring authentic Indian street food, artisanal stalls, festive décor, and family-friendly entertainment.
